UChicago faculty members form chapter of Faculty for Justice in Palestine (FJP)

(Chicago, IL—1/12/2024) On December 4, a group of faculty at the University of Chicago voted unanimously to form a Faculty for Justice in Palestine (FJP) chapter.

The faculty coalition originated informally as a group calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, advocating for Palestinian liberation, and supporting students and others protesting for Palestinian rights. Formalized as UChicago FJP, we hope to serve as a political base from which to fight for the liberation of the Palestinian people as well as for broader, intersecting matters of justice. At the time of writing, the chapter has 50 members. ***Update on 4/3/2024: The UChicago FJP chapter now has 105 members.

The chapter has agreed to the following Principles of Unity:

  • FJP is a democratic and plural collective of University of Chicago faculty who support the cause of Palestinian liberation.
  • We define faculty broadly to refer to academic appointees (both tenure and non-tenure track) and staff involved in making education possible at the University of Chicago.
  • FJP understands the struggle for Palestinian freedom to be aligned with anti-colonial movements and struggles in many parts of the world. These include movements for indigenous land rights, Black liberation, gender and sexual freedom, disability justice, and a liveable and sustainable planet.
  • FJP supports the call for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) and for an end to Israel’s occupation and colonization of Palestine. We insist on the fundamental rights of Palestinians to self-determination and equality, and we pledge to respect, protect, and promote the rights of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and lands.
  • FJP rejects the conflation of support for Palestinian liberation with antisemitism; we stand against racism in all its manifestations.
  • FJP supports and amplifies the work of Students for Justice in Palestine and other student groups struggling for Palestinian liberation at the University of Chicago.
  • The most securely employed among us protect more vulnerable members at all times.

Members of faculty and staff at the University of Chicago who affirm these principles are welcome to join our chapter of FJP. To do so, please fill out this form. Alternatively, faculty and staff who want simply to receive occasional announcements about events or actions in support of Palestinians can sign up for our campus-allies announcement list, also via fjpuchicago@gmail.com.
